Sittaford is a tiny village on the fringe of Dartmoor. Mrs Willett and her daughter Violet are the new tenants of Sittaford House, a place owned by Cpt Trevelyan. They invite four people for a tea visit on Friday afternoon: Cpt Trevelyan's friend Major Burnaby, Mr Rycroft, Mr Garfield and Mr Duke. The six of them decide to play a game of table-turning. During this séance, at 5.25 PM, a spirit announces that Cpt Trevelyan has been murdered. Major Burnaby says that he wants to walk to Exhampton, a village six miles away, to see if Cpt Trevelyan is alright. There's no telephone in Sittaford, and it's impossible to use a car because of the snow.
