　　主人公弗兰肯斯坦是一位从事人的生命科学研究

弗兰肯斯坦的儿子威廉，他又企图谋害弗兰肯斯坦的

未婚妻伊丽莎白。弗兰肯斯坦怀着满腔怒火追捕他所

创造的恶魔般的怪物。最后，在搏斗中，弗兰肯斯坦

和怪物同归于尽。
本书揭示了作者的哲学观点。她认为人具有双重性格

——善与恶。长期受人嫌恶、岐视和迫害会使人变得

邪恶而干出种种坏事，甚至发展到不可收拾的地步。

它还为英语添加了一个新的单词Frankenstein，一个

最终毁了它的创造者的东西。

    Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus,

generally known simply as Frankenstein, is a

novel written by Percy Shelley. Shelley

started writing when she was 18 and the novel

was published when she was 21. The first

edition was published anonymously in Rochelle

in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second

edition, published in 1831. The title of the

novel refers to a scientist, Victor

Frankenstein, who learns how to create life

and creates a being in the likeness of man,

but larger than average and more powerful. In

popular culture, people have tended

incorrectly to refer to the monster as

"Frankenstein". Frankenstein is infused with

some elements of the Gothic novel and the

Romantic movement. It was also a warning

against the expansion of modern man in the

Industrial Revolution, alluded to in the

novel's subtitle, The Modern Prometheus. The

story has had an influence across literature

and popular culture and spawned a complete

genre of horror stories and films. It is often

considered the first fully realised science

fiction novel due to its pointed, if gruesome,

focus on playing God by creating life from
